Sutherland Entertainment Centre Unveils $12 Million Renovation
The Sutherland Entertainment Centre has reopened following an $12 million renovation that has transformed the 40-year-old venue while preserving its beloved character.
The refurbishment, completed on time and within budget, includes upgraded acoustics, new seating throughout, improved accessibility, and modernised backstage facilities.
“This venue has been the heart of cultural life in the Shire for four decades,” said Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pesce. “The renovation ensures it remains so for decades to come.”

Preserving Community Character
Despite the significant changes, the renovation was designed to maintain the venue’s community feel.
“We wanted to improve everything without making it feel like a different place,” explained project architect Sarah Kim. “Regular patrons will notice it’s better, but it still feels like their entertainment centre.”
Local artwork features prominently in the refurbished spaces, including a commissioned mural depicting the Shire’s maritime heritage and a rotating gallery of works by Sutherland Shire artists.
The venue’s distinctive exterior facade has been retained and restored, maintaining its presence on Eton Street.
Community Investment
The renovation was funded through a combination of council reserves, state government grants, and a community fundraising campaign that exceeded its $500,000 target.
“The fundraising response showed how much this venue means to the community,” noted Mayor Pesce. “Over 2,000 households contributed. That’s remarkable.”
Donors of $1,000 or more had their names inscribed on seats in the renovated auditorium. Several families chose to honour deceased relatives who had been regular patrons.
Looking Forward
Centre management is now booking acts through 2027, with several major touring productions already confirmed for next year.
“The upgraded facilities make us much more attractive to quality touring shows,” said venue manager Christine Morris. “Productions that previously bypassed us for city venues are now considering us.”
The Sutherland Entertainment Centre is located at 30 Eton Street, Sutherland. For the full season program and ticket bookings, visit the venue website or box office.
