St George Business Awards 2024: Local Champions Recognised at Gala Event
The St George region’s most innovative and community-minded businesses were celebrated at the 2024 St George Business Awards, held at Ramsgate RSL last Friday evening.
Over 300 business owners, employees, and community members attended the gala event, which recognised excellence across 12 categories. This year’s ceremony placed particular emphasis on sustainability and digital innovation, reflecting the evolving priorities of local businesses.
“The calibre of entries this year was exceptional,” said awards coordinator Michelle Tran. “It’s clear that St George businesses aren’t just surviving; they’re leading the way in how small businesses can adapt and thrive.”
Major Winners
Business of the Year went to Bexley North’s GreenTech Solutions, a family-owned company that has pivoted from traditional electrical work to solar installation and home battery systems. Owner Paul Stavros accepted the award on behalf of his 12-person team.
“Ten years ago, we were wiring houses. Now we’re helping them generate their own power,” Stavros said. “The market changed, and we changed with it. This award belongs to my team who believed in the vision.”
Innovation Award was presented to Hurstville’s MediQuick Pharmacy for their AI-powered medication management system that helps elderly patients track their prescriptions and receive refill reminders.
Young Business Leader recognised 28-year-old Jessica Wong of Kogarah, whose digital marketing agency has grown from a solo operation to a team of seven in just three years.
Sustainability Focus
This year saw the introduction of a dedicated Sustainability Award, won by Rockdale cafe Zero Waste Kitchen for their comprehensive approach to eliminating single-use packaging and food waste.
“Every business can do something,” said owner Amanda Liu. “You don’t have to be perfect from day one. Just start somewhere and keep improving.”
The judges noted a marked increase in sustainability initiatives across all category entries, suggesting environmental responsibility is becoming standard rather than exceptional.
Community Impact
Several awards recognised businesses for their community contributions beyond commercial success.
Penshurst’s Multicultural Community Hub received the Community Impact Award for providing free English classes and employment support to new migrants. The organisation operates primarily through volunteer effort and local business sponsorship.
“Business success means nothing if your community isn’t thriving,” said hub coordinator Maria Santos. “We all benefit when everyone has opportunity.”
Looking Ahead
The awards committee announced several changes for 2025, including a new category for businesses demonstrating successful digital transformation and expanded recognition for Indigenous-owned enterprises.
Entry information for the 2025 awards will be available from March through the St George Business Chamber website.
The full list of 2024 winners is available at the chamber’s website, along with profiles of each winning business.
