Mortdale Main Street Revitalisation Project Gets Green Light
Mortdale’s main shopping strip is set for a major facelift after Georges River Council approved an $8 million revitalisation project that will transform Morts Road into a pedestrian-friendly retail destination.
The upgrade, scheduled to begin in September, includes widened footpaths, new street trees, improved lighting, and designated outdoor dining areas for local cafes and restaurants.
“Mortdale has always had a village feel that residents love,” said Mayor Nick Katris. “This project will enhance that character while making the street safer and more inviting for everyone.”

Business Owner Reactions
Local business owners have expressed cautious optimism about the project, though some concerns remain about construction disruption.
“We’ve been asking for outdoor dining for years,” said Sophia Andros, owner of Mortdale Bakehouse. “It will completely change our lunch trade. People want to sit outside on a nice day.”
Hardware store owner Tom Nguyen was more reserved. “The end result will be great, but I’m worried about losing customers during construction. Council needs to support businesses through the transition.”
Council has committed to a business support package including:
- Reduced parking fines during construction
- Marketing campaign to encourage continued patronage
- Expedited outdoor dining permit processing
- Regular communication about construction scheduling
Construction Timeline
Work will be staged to minimise disruption:
- September-November 2025: Northern side footpath works
- December 2025-February 2026: Southern side footpath works
- March-April 2026: Road surface upgrade and parking reconfiguration
- May 2026: Final landscaping and street furniture installation
At least one side of the street will remain accessible to pedestrians at all times, and businesses will maintain access throughout.
Community Input
The approved design incorporates feedback from extensive community consultation conducted over the past 18 months. Over 400 residents participated in surveys and workshops.
“The community was clear about what they wanted: more trees, more seating, and a safer environment for families,” noted council’s Director of Infrastructure, Peter Stavros. “This design delivers on all those priorities.”
The project is jointly funded by Georges River Council and a NSW Government grant through the Streets as Shared Spaces program.
Residents with questions about the project can attend a community information session at Mortdale Community Centre on May 28.
