Kogarah Town Square Christmas Markets Return with Record Vendor Numbers
The popular Kogarah Town Square Christmas Markets will return next week with a record 85 vendors, expanding to three consecutive weekends in response to growing community demand.
Georges River Council announced the expanded format after last year’s markets drew over 15,000 visitors across two weekends, with many vendors selling out well before closing time.
“The feedback was clear: people wanted more,” said events coordinator Lisa Pham. “More time to browse, more variety, more opportunities to support local makers and businesses.”
What to Expect
This year’s markets feature an eclectic mix of local artisans, food producers, and small businesses:
Handmade goods including jewellery, ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and artwork from St George and Sutherland Shire creators
Gourmet food ranging from locally roasted coffee and artisan chocolates to multicultural cuisines reflecting the area’s diverse community
Live entertainment with local school choirs, community bands, and dance groups performing throughout each day
Children’s activities including face painting, craft workshops, and a visit from Santa on the final weekend
Supporting Local Makers
For many vendors, the Christmas markets represent a significant portion of their annual income. Sarah Mitchell, who sells handmade candles under the label Shire Scents, said the markets changed her business.
“I started selling online, but nothing beats face-to-face. People can smell the candles, ask questions, hear the story. Last year’s markets funded my entire January.”
First-time vendor James Chen will be selling hand-carved wooden toys from his Mortdale workshop. “I’ve been making these for my kids and their friends. Everyone kept saying I should sell them. The markets seemed like the perfect place to test the waters.”
Practical Information
Dates: December 7-8, 14-15, and 21-22

Local Business Involvement
Established Kogarah retailers are embracing rather than competing with the markets. Several shops along Railway Parade will offer extended hours and special promotions during market weekends.
“The markets bring people to Kogarah who might not normally visit,” said Kogarah Chamber of Commerce president Robert Yang. “That’s good for everyone. People come for the markets, discover our shops, and come back throughout the year.”
Community Spirit
Council’s Pham said the markets exemplify what makes the St George region special. “This is community supporting community. Local people making things, local people buying things, local kids performing, local volunteers helping out. It’s the best of who we are.”
Volunteer positions are still available for those wanting to help with setup, customer service, or pack-down. Contact Georges River Council’s events team to register.
