Bexley North Tradie Builds Booking App After Frustration with Missed Calls
A Bexley North plumber has developed a simple booking application that’s now being used by dozens of tradespeople across the St George region, born from his own frustration with missed calls while on jobs.
Steve Papadopoulos has run his plumbing business for 22 years, spending much of that time playing phone tag with potential customers. Unable to answer calls while under a sink or in a ceiling cavity, he’d return calls during lunch only to find customers had already booked someone else.
“I was losing jobs every single day,” Papadopoulos recalled. “People need a plumber urgently. If they can’t reach you immediately, they move on. I get it, but it was killing me.”
From Problem to Solution
With no coding background, Papadopoulos partnered with a local developer to create TradeBook, a straightforward app that lets customers see his availability and book directly without needing to call.
“I wanted something simple,” he explained. “No bells and whistles. Just let people pick a time that works, tell me what the job is, and we’re done.”
The app shows available time slots, allows customers to describe their issue, and sends automatic confirmation and reminder texts. Papadopoulos receives notifications he can check between jobs.
Solving a Common Problem
Word spread quickly among St George tradies, many of whom faced the same challenge. Within six months, 45 local tradespeople were using the platform, including electricians, builders, painters, and landscapers.
“We all have the same problem,” said Mortdale electrician Jenny Wong. “You can’t answer the phone when you’re working with live wires. Now customers book online, I see it when I finish the job, everyone’s happy.”
The app charges a modest monthly subscription, making it accessible for solo operators. Papadopoulos deliberately kept pricing low. “I’m a tradie, not a tech CEO. I wanted something tradies could actually afford.”
Customer Response
Customers have embraced the convenience. Rockdale resident Maria Chen used the app to book a plumber for the first time last month.
“I hate waiting on hold or leaving voicemails,” she said. “With this, I just picked a time, described the leak, and got a confirmation straight away. He turned up exactly when the app said. So easy.”
The app also reduces no-shows, with automatic reminders sent 24 hours before appointments. Tradespeople report their no-show rates have dropped significantly since adopting the system.
Keeping It Local
Papadopoulos has had interest from interstate businesses wanting to use TradeBook but has chosen to keep the focus local for now.
“Maybe one day we’ll expand, but right now I want to make sure it works really well for St George tradies. These are my mates, my competitors, people I see at the footy. I want to help them specifically.”
He continues to work as a plumber full-time, managing TradeBook as a side project with part-time help from the original developer.
Future Features
Based on user feedback, Papadopoulos is developing additional features including:
- Quote request functionality
- Customer review integration
- Job tracking for ongoing projects
- Payment processing options
“The tradies tell me what they need, and we build it,” he said. “That’s the advantage of being a tradie myself. I actually understand the problems.”
